Sara’s House is a secure, community-based apartment for women fleeing violence or at risk of homelessness. Nestled in a city apartment building, it offers a safe environment where life decisions can be explored with the guidance of a JFS counsellor and case manager.
Formerly known as Alternative Short Term Emergency Housing (ASTEH), Sara’s House is named in honor of Sara Ciacci, a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to uplifting those in need and strengthening the community.
Sara’s story is woven into Vancouver’s history. During the Great Depression, her family, like many in the Jewish community, relied on the vital support of organizations such as the Jewish Food Bank and Jewish Family Services (formerly the Jewish Family Welfare Bureau of Vancouver). The care and kindness of their social worker, Theresa Blumberg, left a lasting impact on Sara, inspiring her to give back.
As an adult, Sara became a champion for ASTEH, showing an unwavering commitment to the residents. She made sure every woman had what she needed to feel safe and supported. Today, Sara’s House continues her legacy of compassion, providing a lifeline to women in crisis and honouring the lasting impact of those who dedicate their lives to helping others.
