Coming Together for Mental Health

Passport: Mental Health

On January 19, JFS, with the generous support of United Way of BC, hosted the inaugural Passport: Mental Health workshops—an inspiring day dedicated to well-being and self-care. In addition to JFS, 10 community non-profits and local mental health and wellness providers engaged attendees through experiential or seminar-type presentations.

Throughout the day, participants explored a range of insightful topics, including massage, stretching, older adult mental health, and food connection, gaining practical tools to support their mental wellness.

OUTSIDER

That same evening, JFS, in collaboration with the Vancouver Jewish Film Festival, was proud to present a special screening of OUTSIDER. The 40-minute film details the life of Vancouver-born Maury Ornest, an artist and former baseball player who grappled with complex mental health issues. This powerful documentary offers a rare and intimate glimpse into a family’s painful journey with mental illness, highlighting the unexpected ways they discovered connection along the way.

Following the screening, Jill Cortes led a thought-provoking panel discussion with mental health experts. Panelists included Laura Ornest, JFS CEO Tanja Demajo, Art Therapist Brooke Henderson, and JFS Clinical Director Alan Stamp. The discussion offered deeper insights and meaningful dialogue on this critical topic.

The evening left guests deeply moved and inspired, fostering awareness, understanding, and connection within our community.

The back-to-back events brought people together to connect, share stories, learn, and discuss the importance of mental health and wellness. A heartfelt thank you to our incredible partners and guests for their dedication, time, and expertise.
