This fall, Barbara Silber celebrated her 75th birthday in a way that truly reflects her generous spirit—by giving back to the community in the spirit of Tikkun Olam. Instead of receiving gifts, Barb and her husband Herb Silber invited family and friends to support a cause close to her heart: The Herb and Barbara Silber Seniors Sharing Shabbat program.
Started by Herb and Barb in 2021, this JFS program provides seniors with more than just a meal—it offers them a cherished moment of connection, tradition, and warmth. Each month, JFS staff and volunteers prepare and hand-deliver a special Shabbat meal, bringing the joy of Jewish tradition right to the doorsteps of seniors in our community.
To encourage donations, Herb made the first gift and generously offered to match all contributions dollar-for-dollar up to $3,600. Thanks to the outpouring of support from friends and family, the fundraiser raised over $10,000, covering the program’s costs for an entire year!
Reflecting on the experience, Barb shared, “It’s a nice thing for everyone to do for any kind of charity, especially as we get older.”
We extend our deepest gratitude to Barb and Herb, and to all who contributed to spreading joy and tradition to seniors each month.
If you’re inspired by Barb’s birthday fundraiser and would like to host your own Peer-to-Peer campaign for JFS, we’d love to help! Visit jfsvancouver.ca/help/fundraiser or email [email protected] to learn more.
Thank you for being part of a community that cares!
