Social Justice Through Counselling

Female counselling talking to clientJFS counsellors are trained to use a social justice lens to reduce barriers affecting marginalized people in our community.

Often, our therapists find that therapy is not enough to treat their client’s concerns. Many times the client and counsellor together look at factors that may be worsening the symptoms. For example, a client whose health is failing because they are consistently hungry may find a deepening of depression and hopelessness. In this case, appropriate treatment would include a referral to a food security program to address the hunger.

Counsellors can identify a variety of community resources to support the client to achieve better mental health and overall well-being. When our therapists advocate for social justice on behalf of their clients, they are helping to reduce stigma and discrimination. This can help clients to gain confidence, and ultimately promotes a greater sense of personal empowerment.
